Best Seafood Restaurants in Kota Kinabalu
If you visit Kota Kinabalu and don’t eat seafood, did you even go? KK sits right on the South China Sea and the seafood here is some of the freshest and most affordable you’ll find anywhere in Malaysia. I’ve eaten at pretty much every seafood spot worth knowing about. Here’s my honest ranking.
1. Kampung Nelayan Floating Seafood Market
This is the one every local takes their out-of-town guests. You pick your seafood live from the tanks and tell them how you want it cooked. The butter prawns here are absolutely ridiculous. The setting is right on the water, prices are fair, and the atmosphere is exactly what KK seafood dining should feel like. Go at sunset for the full experience.
Best for: The full KK seafood experience. Tip: Ask for prices upfront, it’s weight-based.
2. Welcome Seafood Restaurant
Welcome Seafood has been around forever and for good reason. Portions are generous, prices are honest, and the steamed fish is consistently excellent. Less touristy than the waterfront spots, more of a real local favourite. Order the steamed grouper with ginger and soy. You won’t regret it.
Best for: Authentic local experience, great value. Must order: Steamed grouper, butter prawns.
3. Chilli Vanilla
For seafood in a nicer setting, Chilli Vanilla is the go-to. The menu is more creative, plating is better, and it’s perfect for a date or business dinner. Slightly pricier but still very reasonable by international standards. The crab here is outstanding.
Best for: Date nights, special occasions. Must order: Chilli crab, salted egg prawns.
