The Best Supper Spots in KK That Locals Actually Go To

In Kota Kinabalu, supper is not an afterthought. It is a social ritual, a destination in itself, and for many locals, the best meal of the day. The city comes alive after 9pm in ways that most tourists never get to see.

Why supper matters in KK

The logic of eating late in the tropics is simple: it’s cooler, the day’s work is done, and the best produce is now at its peak. Night markets have been a part of KK life for generations.

Sinsuran Night Market

This is the main event. Open from around 6pm until well past midnight, the Sinsuran area fills with stalls selling everything from grilled chicken wings to fresh coconut and whole fried fish. The crowd is almost entirely local.

Go for the Sabah mee stall near the entrance, the BBQ corn with butter and coconut, and if you see a queue at a stall that isn’t labelled — join it.

Filipino Market seafood

The Filipino Market on Jalan Satu has genuinely fresh seafood. The best approach: buy your seafood downstairs from the wet market vendors, then walk it to one of the hawker stalls nearby who will cook it for a small fee. This is what locals actually do.

Ikan bakar at Asia City

There are three or four ikan bakar setups near Asia City that run from around 8pm onwards. You pick your fish or seafood, they grill it over charcoal, and it arrives with rice, sambal, and pickled vegetables. The whole meal costs RM15-25 per person.

When to go

Weekends between 9:30pm and 11pm are peak supper hours. On weekdays, 10pm onwards tends to be quieter and more enjoyable.
